Types Of Glass For Your Shower Door

Kylie Howell

Many homeowners get rid of their shower curtain and replace it with a glass shower door. When they make the change, they update the look of their bathroom. Glass simply conveys a more modern ambience. When you order your glass door, you have several types of glass to choose from.

Clear Glass

For a frameless shower door, contractors typically use heavy-duty tempered glass. The thickness of the heavy-duty glass gives the door structural integrity without the need for a frame. The tempering process makes the glass safe in case it shatters. Instead of sharp shards, you'll have smooth pebbles. Clear glass is the standard for most bathroom applications.

Low-Iron Glass

Iron is a natural component of the silica glass manufacturers use. However, it gives clear glass a greenish undertone. For low-iron glass, the manufacturers use a silica with very low amounts of iron. The result is a perfectly transparent glass. You'll notice it especially at the edge when you don't see the distinctive green. Choose this glass if you want to show off your tiled stall.

Colored Glass

Components in the production of glass can alter the color, as silica does with clear glass. Manufacturers can add compounds into the mix to deliberately alter the color. For instance, the addition of cobalt oxide results in blue-violet glass, while gold chloride makes the glass red. You can choose a colored glass shower door if you want a unique appearance.

Patterned Glass

Patterned glass features a three-dimensional pattern on one side. To make the glass, the manufacturers feed the molten glass through two rollers, one of which is embossed with the pattern. According to experts, this process makes the glass semi-opaque. Patterned glass is a good choice if you want some privacy in the shower stall.

Frosted Glass

Frosted glass features a pitted surface on one side of the glass. The surface scatters the light as it passes through, which blurs the figure behind the panel. Manufacturers get the effect by blasting a clear glass panel with either sand or acid. Frosted glass is another good choice if you want privacy from your shower door.

Etched Glass

Etched glass is very similar to frosted glass, and some people use the term interchangeably. However, manufacturers exclusively use acid to etch the surface of the glass. They also alter the surface for a decorative effect, such as a pattern or image, rather than light diffusing.  Choose etched glass if you want a highly decorative door.
