Reasons You May Hear Rattling Coming From Your Windshield

If you are driving along and hearing a rattling sound, you may turn down your radio and try to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. If it sounds like it is coming from your windshield, you may start to wonder if a windshield can really rattle and why it would make that sound. Here are a few of the top reasons why you may hear rattling coming from your windshield. 

There is a Chip or Crack Which Has Left Debris Along Your Windshield Base

One of the reasons why you may hear rattling coming from your windshield is because a chip or crack has extended to the edges of the glass. When this happens, the edge of the glass may begin to break apart, leaving glass debris to rattle around in the seal and along the edges of your glass. Cracks that extend to the edge of the glass should never be repaired, and the windshield should be replaced to help prevent this issue. 

The Seal Holding Your Windshield is Loose

Another common reason why you may hear rattling coming from your windshield is because the seal holding your windshield is loose. A seal can become loose for a number of reasons. The seal may weaken and become loose due to age. An accident can weaken the seal and cause the auto glass to bounce around. Or, a seal that did not fully cure during the installation process can be loose against your auto glass, causing the windshield to move and leading to the rattling sound you hear. 

The Rattling is Actually Coming From Your Engine Area

Finally, if your engine, or other parts in that area, are running rough,throttling hard or making noises, the vibrations and sound may travel up through the glass, making it sound like your windshield is rattling, when in actually, it is not. If you hear your windshield rattling, open up the hood of your car and start your car up. Listen to your car to see if you hear any rattling to help determine whether it is actually the windshield that is rattling or the engine area of your car. 

If you hear any rattling sound coming from your windshield, especially if you have recently had your windshield replaced or have been involved in an automobile accident, it is important to bring your car to an auto glass repair and replacement company. They can determine if the sound is really coming from your windshield or if the rattling sound from your engine area is making it sound like your windshield is rattling.
